Drought threatens food shortage

Guatemala aims to truck food aid to more than 400,000 families in the coming months as a severe drought threatens food shortages, President Alvaro Colom said on Wednesday.

Colom declared a state of “calamity” over food supply in Guatemala, where a prolonged dry spell has reduced the harvest of staples like maize and beans by up to 50 percent.

…but you can’t make it eat…..

Scientists led a rat to the fatty food, but they couldn’t make it eat. Using an animal model of binge eating, University of Missouri researchers discovered that deactivating the basolateral amygdala, a brain region involved in regulating emotion, specifically blocked consumption of a fatty diet. Surprisingly, it had no effect on the rat wanting to look for the food repeatedly.

But the bacteria living in your mouth do some good when it comes to the “retroaromatic effect”.  Have you ever had a good glass of Sauvignon Blanc?  That clean, crispy start followed by that sweet honeyed flavor at the finish? Well the flavors in the finish are part of the  retroaromatic effect.

Fast Food Mostly Feeds You Corn

Corn Fed Beef – That’s what you get when you go to McDonalds, Burger King or Wendy’s.  Honestly, that’s what you’re familiar with. The American palate has developed a taste for corn fed beef as our diets have shifted from “meat as garnish” to “meat as entree”.

So where does all this corn come from?  From the same farms that supply the sweet yellow veg. that takes the spotlight during the warmer months and makes its way into Chowders in the winter. There is no designated “cow corn”.
